Through this project we seek to:

Stimulate an awareness of the practices of northern-Peruvian curanderismo within the wider community of concerned individuals and institutions.

Generate an informed interest in the preservation of its artistry and healing practices, while recognizing their value to modern medicine, ecological awareness, and contemporary spirituality.

Portray the complex and holistic means of curing in its rich cultural and archaeological history, cosmology, music, as well as the living narrative of its practitioners.

Relate Peruvian curanderismo as an example of an indigenous tradition that through a simultaneous preservation of its roots and an open and syncretic attitude to transformation has managed to survive immense cultural changes in the society within which it is immersed.

Provide an inspirational, informative, and emotionally engaging visual and auditory immersion into this ancient visionary tradition that in itself will have a transformative effect upon its viewers.

Open the potential to initiate a series of documentary films on the indigenous healing traditions of the Americas.

To accomplish these goals we will:

Document the lives and practices of various male and female healers through an anthropological informed and artistically sensitive approach.

Follow an individual’s process of curing through his or her transformation from illness to health and elicit stories of personal transformation from those in contact with curanderismo.

Offer insight and contextualization by the leading scholars in the field, from varied disciplines, such as anthropology (medical and cultural), archaeology, and the visual arts.

Highlight the ethno botanical research being conducted by Douglas Sharon, Ph.D. and his collaborative staff from the US and Peru.

Return 10% of our profits to the communities of our collaborating healers to support activities and projects that form part of cultural back-bone of curanderismo.
